What is Trivia Challenge?®

Trivia Challenge is an exciting and educational event conducted throughout Australia each year. It is designed to develop an understanding of epilepsy and enhance general knowledge by using a specially developed trivia quiz based on the school curriculum.

Students from Years 4, 5, 6 and 7 are encouraged to compete in teams of either three or four to answer a 45 minute questionnaire consisting of 100 questions. All quiz materials are supplied to participating schools. Topics include English, History, Geography, Maths, Sports, Science, Current Affairs, Entertainment & the Arts and the Environment. Questions on epilepsy are also included in the quiz. (A free comprehensive resource kit on epilepsy is distributed to all participating schools so that teachers and students can learn about epilepsy). Click here to find out more information about registration.

This National competition is run in three stages:

  • The first stage is at school level where children participate in a school-based general knowledge quiz.
  • In the second stage, the winning teams from each school are invited to participate in the State finals.
  • In stage three, the winning team from the Year 7 State finals will be brought to Brisbane to participate at National level in an on-line final.

The 45 minute questionnaire can be taken at any time convenient to the school during the nominated quiz period (July/August) or during a month to suit your school. Many schools choose to take the quiz during a wet lunch hour or a spare period.

The Queensland State Finals will be held at the UQ Centre, St Lucia, Brisbane on 10 October 2010. This year, regional schools will be able to participate in the State finals at their own school under a new system which is currently being developed.

In addition to its educational value, Trivia Challenge is also a way of raising vitally needed funds for Epilepsy Queensland to help promote their Epilepsy Awareness Program in schools. Funds can be raised by the participating students seeking sponsorship prior to undertaking the quiz or by other means suited to the individual student and or school.

So . . . why take part?

There are four beneficiaries from the project:

  1. THE STUDENTS BENEFIT:
Rewards and recognition are received for achievements such as most successful team, highest fundraiser and the ultimate goal of entry to State and National Championships. (PLUS!! Their team-building skills and general knowledge are also benefiting them!!) Besides all else . . . they HAVE FUN !!!
  2. THE COMMUNITY BENEFITS:
The students pass on their newly acquired understanding of epilepsy to family, friends and other members of the community.
  3. PEOPLE WITH EPILEPSY BENEFIT:
The myths surrounding epilepsy are dispelled and consequently acceptance is improved, understanding of the condition is improved and more help is available. This is especially helpful if there are children with epilepsy at the school.
  4. EPILEPSY QUEENSLAND BENEFITS:
T he funds raised by students and schools allow Epilepsy Queensland to continue to provide services and programs to help people with epilepsy.

Epilepsy Queensland greatly appreciates the assistance and support of the following:

  • Queensland Government Department of Education and Training for supporting our education activities
  • Ys Clothing Company for sponsorship of marketing materials
  • The Hon. Kevin Rudd MP for donation of a bicycle
