Seizure Types

There are over 40+ different seizure types and over 100+ different syndromes.

There are many different types of seizures. In recent times there have been some major scientific advances that have dramatically changed our understanding of epilepsy and seizures. As a result, there have been recent changes made to seizure terminology.

It often takes time to accept changes for most of us, so we may encounter doctors, specialists and websites that use the old terminology.

Seizures can be divided into two major groups: focal (partial) and generalized.

The following pages describe some of the most common seizure types.
